What is in the Name Drunken Noodles

There are many theories about how the name drunken noodles came into existence and the most commonly used theme is that this particular noodle dish is created by using alcohol. While the chefs of today may resort to such a type of preparation, it was not the method that was followed back in the times.

To understand the origin of the name one has to first understand the cuisine that it belongs to. A common misconception here is that drunken noodle is a dish from mainland China. This is false as it actually belongs to the Thai cuisine and therefore is supposed to be quite spicy and piquant. With this understanding one can realize the fact that alcohol would not be used in the dish. Instead, the name comes from the fact that the spicy nature of the noodles forced people to take a lot of water along with it and therefore become drunk with water in the stomach.
